Amboseli National Park

Amboseli is famous for its large herds of free-ranging elephants and the best views in Africa of Mount Kilimanjaro rising just across the border in Tanzania. The park's dried-up lake bed and permanent swamps, fed by underground rivers from Kilimanjaro's glaciers, draw huge concentrations of wildlife even in the driest months. Photographers travel from around the world for the iconic shot of elephant herds silhouetted against the snow-capped peak at sunrise. Smaller than the Mara but no less rewarding, Amboseli also supports healthy populations of buffalo, giraffe, zebra and over 400 bird species, and its Maasai community-run conservancies mean tourism directly supports local livelihoods.

Tanzania

Kilimanjaro

Africa's highest peak and one of the world's most iconic trekking destinations, Mount Kilimanjaro rises 5,895 metres over the plains of northern Tanzania, just across the border from Amboseli. Unlike most major peaks, Kilimanjaro requires no technical climbing gear — its summit is reachable on foot via several well-established routes, making it one of the most attainable of the world's Seven Summits for prepared trekkers. The climb passes through five distinct ecological zones, from lush rainforest to alpine desert to arctic summit conditions, often within a single week-long trek. For those not climbing, Kilimanjaro's snow-capped silhouette is one of the defining backdrops of an East African safari, visible from Amboseli on a clear day.

Kwale Coast

Pristine beaches and turquoise waters line Kenya's southern coast around Kwale, offering the perfect way to unwind after days on safari. Diani Beach, one of Africa's most celebrated stretches of coastline, combines powder-white sand with a living coral reef just offshore, ideal for snorkelling, diving and dhow sailing trips. The region is also home to the Shimba Hills National Reserve, one of the only places in Kenya to see the rare sable antelope, and to coastal forests rich in birdlife and butterflies. Warm Indian Ocean waters, fresh seafood, and a laid-back Swahili coast atmosphere make Kwale a popular add-on to combine a safari with a beach holiday.

Lake Nakuru National Park

A compact soda lake ringed by acacia woodland and steep escarpments, Lake Nakuru is one of the best places in Kenya to see both black and white rhino, protected within a fully fenced sanctuary. The lake itself was once famous worldwide for its enormous flocks of flamingos, and while their numbers now shift with water levels, pelicans, storks and dozens of other waterbird species remain a constant sight. Its relatively small size and good road network make it an easy, rewarding stop for travellers short on time, and Rothschild's giraffe, buffalo and leopard round out an impressively dense wildlife population for such a compact park. Nakuru is also just a few hours from Nairobi, making it a popular first or last stop on a Kenya itinerary.

Maasai Mara

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is Kenya's most famous wildlife destination, an endless rolling savannah where the Big Five roam freely against a backdrop of acacia trees and dramatic skies. Every year between July and October, over 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra thunder across the Mara River in the Great Migration — one of the most spectacular wildlife events on Earth. Beyond the migration, the Mara offers year-round game viewing, hot air balloon safaris at sunrise, and the chance to visit Maasai villages and experience their culture firsthand. Its dense predator population, especially lions and cheetahs, makes it one of the most reliable places in Africa to witness a real hunt.

Nairobi

The vibrant capital of Kenya and gateway to world-class safaris, Nairobi is the starting point for almost every HOLYLAND journey. It's one of the only capital cities in the world with a national park inside its boundaries — Nairobi National Park — where you can see rhino, lion and giraffe with the city skyline in the background. Beyond wildlife, Nairobi offers the Giraffe Centre, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's elephant orphanage, and a growing food and culture scene worth a day or two before or after your safari. Its international airport connects easily to the Maasai Mara, the coast, and destinations across East Africa, making Nairobi the natural hub for planning your trip.

Tanzania

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact, unflooded volcanic caldera — a collapsed volcano roughly 20 kilometres across, its walls forming a natural amphitheatre around one of Africa's densest wildlife concentrations. An estimated 25,000 large animals live within the crater floor year-round, in a self-contained ecosystem so productive that game drives here rank among the most reliable in East Africa. It's one of the most consistent places in Tanzania to see black rhino, alongside dense populations of lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo and zebra, all within a single, dramatic bowl of grassland, forest and soda lake. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, Ngorongoro is administered as a multiple-use conservation area, shared with Maasai communities who still graze cattle within its boundaries. Samburu National Reserve

North of the equator along the Ewaso Nyiro River, Samburu feels different from anywhere else in Kenya — drier, wilder, and home to the Samburu Special Five: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk and beisa oryx, species found nowhere else on a typical safari. The reserve's riverine forest draws elephants, lions and leopards down to drink, especially in the dry season, while the surrounding red-earth plains and doum palms give it a striking, almost otherworldly landscape. Samburu is also home to the Samburu people, whose culture and traditions remain deeply connected to this land, and community conservancies here have become a model for conservation done in partnership with local communities. Its remoteness means smaller crowds and a genuine sense of wilderness.

Tanzania

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is the Maasai Mara's vastly larger southern twin, sprawling across northern Tanzania in one continuous, unfenced ecosystem that wildlife cross freely between the two countries. Its name comes from the Maasai word "siringet," meaning "the place where the land runs forever" — an apt description for plains that stretch to the horizon in every direction. The Serengeti is the primary stage for the Great Migration for much of the year, hosting over two million wildebeest and zebra in an endless search for fresh grazing, trailed by the highest density of lion in Africa. Beyond the migration, the park holds resident populations of the Big Five, cheetah hunting across open grassland, and some of the best big-cat photography on the continent. Kenya

Tsavo East National Park

One of Kenya's oldest and largest parks, Tsavo East is known for its red-dust elephants, whose skin is stained rust-red from dust baths in the park's iron-rich soil. It's also home to the dramatic Yatta Plateau — at nearly 300km long, the world's longest lava flow — and the Lugard Falls, where the Galana River is forced through a narrow rocky gorge. Tsavo East has a rugged, wide-open feel with far fewer vehicles than the more famous parks, making it a favourite for travellers who want an authentic, less-crowded safari. Lion, buffalo, and the occasional black rhino can also be spotted here, alongside some of the largest elephant herds left in Kenya.
